EN101: Classroom Policies

Classroom Policies, Which I Take Very Seriously Indeed:

  1. To pass this course you should score a minimum grade of C. A grade lower than a C in your overall average will necessitate your retaking the course.
  2. Intellectual honesty is the bedrock of communal learning; plagiarism is a very, very bad thing! Misused or unattributed sources are of great concern, and can result in dismissal or suspension from the University. If you have any questions about use of sources, what counts as plagiarism, and so on, please see me. I do make use of the academic integrity violation form!
  3. Several policies govern all formal assignments. All projects should observe the parameters of MLA formatting. Essays not observing these stylistic parameters will automatically lose 1/3 of a letter grade (for instance: from B- to C+). Citation and documentation requirements are in addition to formatting requirement. Because faulty citation or incomplete documentation can result in plagiarism, I will evaluate each essay's use of sources individually. I will often ask that essays not completely or correctly documented be revised before I grade them; however, should the problems persist, I will either deduct significant portions of the grade or fail the assignment. There is also a sample MLA composition essay in your Hacker Handbook (MLA-5b).
  4. Regular attendance is expected in the course, and if you are not here you will do poorly on exams and other assignments. However, I will not take attendance; I feel that, as college students, you can make these informed decisions yourself. However, I will not accept late work (see 4 below). Further, I incorporate classroom participation into your project grades, so absences will lower it.
    • In the event of an absence, it is your responsibility to speak with a peer to get notes, homework assignments, and so on. Because our schedule may change as a result of the needs of each individual class, I can’t give you daily assignments weeks in advance!
    • Presentation dates are sacrosanct, and missing your turn means missing your turn. Period.
  5. All of the reading assignments must by completed by the assigned date. Come to class prepared to discuss the readings. Lack of preparation will show up in your participation components as well as in other in-class and take home assignments.
  6. I will not accept late work--all assignments must be submitted IN HARD COPY, unless otherwise noted, by the due date. If you know you will not be able to complete an assignment in the timeframe provided, see me as soon as possible so that we can work something out.
  7. Students are required to have access to Blackboard and are responsible for checking your assigned Marymount email account regularly. I will use this address to communicate electronically. If you are having trouble accessing your email, logging on to your My.Marymount portal page, or navigating Blackboard, please call IT Services at 703.526.6990. You may also visit them in person; the main office for IT Services is located on the ground floor of Berg Hall (Main Campus). If you have problems with our course wiki pages, please contact me.
  8. Email communication: Please be sure, on all your electronic correspondence with me, to write with care and thought. If you do not include your name and indicate which course you are taking, I will not know who is writing me.
  9. If you have any questions or concerns at all, it is imperative that you come and see me about them! Otherwise, I will not know, and will therefore have no opportunity to address them.

University Statements on:

  • Academic Integrity: By accepting this syllabus, you pledge to uphold the principles of Academic Integrity expressed by the Marymount University Community. You agree to observe these principles yourself and to defend them against abuse by others.
  • Special Needs and Accommodations: Please advise the instructor of any special problems or needs at the beginning of the semester. If you seek accommodation based on disabilities, you should provide a Faculty Contact Sheet obtained through Disability Support Services located in Gerard Hall, (703) 284-1605.
  • Access to Student Work: Copies of your work in this course including copies of any submitted papers and your portfolios may be kept on file for institutional research, assessment and accreditation purposes. All work used for these purposes will be submitted anonymously.
  • University Policy on Snow Closings: Snow closings are generally announced on area radio stations. For bulletins concerning Marymount snow or weather closings, call (703) 526-6888. Unless otherwise advised by radio announcement or by official bulletins on the number listed above, students are expected to report for class as near normal time as possible on days when weather conditions are adverse. Decisions as to snow closing or delayed opening are not generally made before 5:00 AM of the working day. Students are expected to attend class if the University is not officially closed.
  • Turnitin.com: It is possible that student work will be submitted to TurnItIn.com for review.
