Over the course of the term, I will often ask you to write brief one-two page responses to a particular question, experience, or point of class discussion. Many of these are noted on the syllabus, though others may be added as the need arises. In these responses, I am looking for the following things:
- A well-organized essay that has a beginning and an ending, not a collection of thoughts without order. It need not have a complex thesis, but it should have a single, clearly visible point.
- That point should address as accurately, precisely, and creatively as possible the question(s) I pose.
- Length may not be more than two pages, but it cannot be shorter than one page. If you quote a text, it MUST be cited properly and contain a works cited page.
- MLA formatting from top to bottom. You have the MLA handbook, and part of what I'm assessing is your ability to get this objective material correct.
- Writing tone and style may be less formal and more conversational, but your work should nonetheless be readable and slang-free. Please spell check and proofread before turning anything in!
