Its Doll's Eyes Shut Forever

Page history last edited by Athenna Harrison 15 years, 6 months ago

In this line Sexton characterizes Snow White as nothing more than an object. In fact, she doesn’t even use Snow White’s name, instead she uses “its” (128). Names are important because they identify and represent a person. Having no name means that the person is a "nobody". The word “its” is the possessive form of the word “it” which is used to “represent an inanimate thing” (Dictionary.com). Sexton also calls Snow White’s eyes “doll’s eyes” (128). A “doll’s eyes” are very glassy and though they are meant to act as real eyes, they don’t actually see anything and are there to enhance the doll’s beauty. Referring to her eyes this way could mean that Sexton believes that Snow White’s eyes just enhanced her beauty and were not used for anything else. Now, they are “shut forever” (128) and no longer have any use.  (A. Harrison)
