as women do

Up until this point in the poem, Anne Sexton consistently referred to Snow White as a “virgin”, a “child”, a “china doll”.  This is the first instance in the poem where Sexton recognizes the time that has passed and that Snow White is no longer the virgin child she once was.  This mention of Snow White “sometimes referring to her mirror” (150) signifies that Snow White is no longer the little “dumb bunny” (104) she used to be.  She is maturing, and she is more aware of her breathtaking beauty.  The mention of her checking the mirror could be a foreshadowing that someday, her “china-blue doll eyes” (6) might turn green with envy at the next “beauty surpassing her own” (20).    [S.
