Grading rubric
Your last essay for this class will be a more substantial analysis essay that combines close reading with theoretical interpretation. In this essay, you'll examine an important theme in a selection of Bishop's poems from a theoretically-informed position. You should identify a theme that interests you, and select (or combine) critical perspectives that will help you support or defend an interpretation of that theme--what are we to draw from it? What is the shape and the critical significance of this theme? I'll be asking you to use library research materials (no web sites!) to help frame your argument or to position Bishop's poems in any necessary way. Your works cited page should include at least three scholarly sources plus your poems.
Your essay should be 8-10 pages, and it should have a clear thesis, logical organization, coherent development, elegant prose, and effective use of support. MLA format should go without saying! See the full grading rubric for more information.
