What do I need to do  before meeting with my Advisor?

Registration dates for Spring terms start near the end of October for Honors and Graduate Students. For Fall terms, registration starts in the middle of March. You'll need to speak with your Advisor at least a week before you're scheduled to register. When you meet with your Advisor, be sure to have reviewed your program evaluation via Marynet, and used that to generate a working class schedule. You will find a blank weekly calendar sheet, like this, helpful. Bring your working class schedule and all other documents related to your educational choices--it's your education, and you'll need to come prepared!

Remember: Your Advisor's purpose isn't to design a schedule for you--rather, it is to ensure you're on track to graduation, taking the best courses for your interests, and thinking productively about internship and further education opportunities. Your Advisor also removes your advising hold--which means you can't register until you get your courses organized and approved. Before you meet with your advisor for registration, be sure to look through the calendar and select possible courses! Come into the meeting with a plan, with questions, and so on.

Catalogs, Classes, Consortium, and More

The catalog will help you learn about the content and purpose of each class--it can give you course descriptions, academic plans, and overviews of majors and minors (the PDF of the catalog is full-text searchable). To search for classes, use the schedule of classes available in Marynet. You can also talk with your advisor about taking a class in the Consortium (at Georgetown, George Washington, George Mason, Catholic, and so on), or studying abroad for a whole semester, so think boldly! Don't forget that there are a variety of interdisciplinary and other minor programs--a minor can help you gain knowledge in a secondary field that often supports the first. You can also suggest an Independent Study, if you're interested in something particular that isn't offered at MU--if you have 9 friends willing to sign a petition, you can request that a new course be added, too.
